MANILA – Mother Earth Foundation and the Zero Waste International Alliance, together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the National Solid Waste Management Commission and the League of Municipalities of the Philippines, will host the 6th Zero Waste International Dialogue at the Puerto Princesa City Coliseum from November 18 to 21, 2009. Local and international government officials and representatives from businesses, schools and non-government organizations are expected to participate in the conference, which carries the theme “Zero Waste Solutions in the Face of Climate, Chemical and Financial Crises.”
The International Dialogue aims to promote zero waste programs, which are described as the fastest and most cost effective ways that local governments can contribute to reducing climate change, protect health, create green jobs and promote local sustainability. Zero waste, by definition, is a goal that is both pragmatic and visionary, to guide people to emulate sustainable natural cycles, where all discarded materials are resources for others to use. Government officials and resource management experts have been invited to provide a detailed discussion on the proposed framework.
Among the confirmed panelists and speakers were Paul Connett (Professor of Chemistry, St Lawrence University, New York, USA), Rick Anthony (California Resource Recovery Association, USA), Shibu Nair (Thanal, India), Gerry Gillespie (New South Wales Department of Environment & Conservation, Australia), Mal Williams (Cylch – Wales Community Recycling Network), Paolo Guarnaccia (Terre di Sicilia, Italy), Rossano Ercolini (ZW Italian Network) and Muna Lakhani (Zero Waste in Africa).
Local speakers from the Philippines include Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Jose Atienza, National Solid Waste Management Commission Executive Director Gerardo Calderon, Puerto Princesa City Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn, Caloocan City Mayor Enrico Echiverri, Los Baños Mayor Caesar P. Perez, Sto. Tomas (Davao del Norte) Mayor Maximo M. Estela, Northern Samar Governor Raul A. Daza, Ramon Magsaysay awardee Tony Oposa Jr., Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives Co-coordinator and EcoWaste Coalition President Manny Calonzo, Sr. Arcelita Sarnillo, SPC and Altavas Municipal Agriculturist Mila Andrade.
Mother Earth Foundation is a non-government organization of men and women from the Philippines who seek to raise the level of public awareness on environmental issues and mobilize people to act positively on the resolution of these issues.
The Zero Waste International Alliance is a global zero waste movement promoting positive alternatives to landfill and incineration and raising community awareness about the social and economic benefits of waste as a valuable resource for employment and business opportunity.
