Mother Earth Foundation and the Zero Waste International Alliance, with the National Solid Waste Management Commission, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the League of Municipalities of the Philippines as co-convenors, will host the 6th Zero Waste International Dialogue from November 18 to 21, 2009. The annual event, which will be held at the Puerto Princesa City Coliseum in Palawan, will gather government officials and representatives from non-government organizations and academic institutions. The Dialogue is supported by government organizations and non-profit groups such as the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP), the Eco Waste Coalition and the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA).

The 6th Zero Waste International Dialogue carries an overarching theme, “Zero Waste Solutions in the Face of Climate, Chemical and Financial Crises,” to illustrate the huge potential of zero waste solution in averting these crises through careful measures presented in plenary and skills-share sessions. Likewise, the conference is divided into three discussion topics: Zero Waste as a Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Measure; Zero Waste as a Tool for Chemical Safety; and Zero Waste as a Job and Livelihood Solution. In addition, the discussion will cover issues on obstacles to achieving zero waste, dumpsite closure, extended producer responsibility and model ecological solid waste management practices, among others. To culminate the conference, eco-tours will cover trips to Puerto Princesa City’s barangay-level materials recovery facilities and tourist destinations such as the Puerto Princesa City Subterranean River National Park, Honda Bay, the Iwahig Penal Colony and the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center.
